Overweight: how often it hits and what it costs

Added when a loaded container is too heavy for a standard chassis and legal road weight.

The short answer. In our data, 4.1% of ocean container shipments whose final trucking the forwarder arranged were charged overweight. When it was charged, the median bill was $170 per shipment. The middle half of bills ran from $120 to $200, and 1 in 10 was over $310.

When do overweight container fees apply?

US roads limit how much a truck, chassis and loaded container may weigh together, so a heavy container may need a special tri-axle chassis, a permit or a different route. Truckers bill that as an overweight fee. Dense cargo such as tile, stone, glass, metal and machinery is the usual cause.

Overweight by port

How often shipments at each published port were charged overweight. Ports with too few importers are left out, and a dash means too few bills to publish a cost.

How to avoid overweight

  • Give your forwarder the real gross weight at booking so the right chassis is ordered.
  • For dense cargo, compare a lighter load in more containers against the overweight fees.
