Named measures

Freight Benchmarks measures

Named, dated figures for what US import container shipments are billed, each with a fixed definition, its own page, the full series and a citation.

Every measure here comes from line-item forwarder invoices for US import ocean container shipments, under the same publication rules as the fee pages: no importer carries more than 25% of any figure, every group draws on at least 10 importers, and a new share is published exactly only when the shipments behind it come from at least 3 importers. None uses carrier, terminal or vessel-tracking data.

Questions

What is the Freight Benchmarks D&D Rate?

The share of US import ocean container shipments billed demurrage or per diem (detention) at least once, by the quarter of the shipment's first invoice. For shipments first invoiced April 2026 to June 2026, it was 1.6%.

How much of an import freight bill is fees beyond the ocean freight?

In Freight Benchmarks' invoice data, charges other than the ocean freight line were 24.9% of the bill on door-delivered shipments first invoiced July 2024 to June 2026: 33 cents for every $1 of ocean freight.

Are these figures per container or per shipment?

The fee pages report per shipment. The per-container figures use shipments that carried exactly one container, 86.2% of all shipments, so the bill is that container's bill.

Where do the numbers come from?

From line-item forwarder invoices billed to US importers for ocean container shipments, aggregated under publication rules that keep any single importer from being identifiable. None of these measures uses carrier, terminal or vessel-tracking data.
