About Freight Benchmarks

Freight quotes compete on the ocean rate. The bill that arrives later is often different: demurrage because a box sat past its free time, per diem because the empty went back late, a chassis split at the rail ramp, a customs exam nobody planned for. Those fees are hard to budget because nobody publishes how often they happen or what they cost.

Freight Benchmarks publishes those numbers. Every figure comes from real line-item invoices for ocean container shipments into US ports, shared by a licensed US freight forwarder and customs broker as anonymized records. We aggregate them by fee and by port, follow strict publication rules so no importer can be identified, and refresh the data every month.

The data is free to use and cite under CC BY 4.0. Journalists, analysts and importers can download it as CSV or JSON.
